McDowell Hospitalized With Kidney Stone On Friday Morning, Back At Track Friday Afternoon

Michael McDowell started his Friday morning at a local Charlotte area hospital. McDowell, had severe abdominal pains and was admitted to have a scan to make sure his appendix didn’t need to be removed. Instead, it was another medical problem – kidney stones.

The Front Row Motorsports driver got treatment and was able to return to the track for qualifying later on in the day. He missed practice which allowed Austin Cindric to hop into his No. 34 Ford for the lone session of the day.

With McDowell back at the Charlotte Motor Speedway earlier this afternoon, it allowed him to qualify for Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 (2:30 p.m. ET/NBC/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

He’d go from hospital for painful kidney stones to qualifying 22nd in a span of hours.

“I’m feeling much better than I was this morning,” McDowell said. “I just woke up this morning with a lot of abdominal pain and side pain. Not sure what was going on. I just thought, ‘Ahh, you know, I’ll just fight through it.’ As the morning went on, it was clearly evident it was not something I was going to fight through.

“Got to the race track right before the garage opened and went to the infield care center and I was just in a lot of pain. Shortly after that I passed my first kidney stone and I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. It was rough but now I feel pretty good.”s.

McDowell, 28th in points, is often at his best on road courses, with a career average finish of 26.7, nearly five spots higher than his overall average finish of 31.2. He started and finished 18th in last year.
