Right now, I’d have to say that both Chase Elliott and William Byron look like legitimate race winning contenders for Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 (2:30 p.m. ET/NBC/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
Byron, swept the pole positions this year for the Charlotte Motor Speedway as he started P1 in not just the Coca-Cola 600 but for this weekend’s race on the ROVAL as well. The North Carolina native was also third, sixth and seventh respectively in his No. 24 Chevrolet in practice too and looks like a strong sleeper to win Sunday’s race.
Byron, had a fast race car on both road course races this season as well. If you remember right, he went for stage points instead of the win in Sonoma. Then, at Watkins Glen, if not for a retaliation move that damaged his car early on in the race, he was set for a top five finish that day too.
He holds onto the final spot that advances to the Round of 12 as he leads his teammate Alex Bowman by just two points for that position. If he runs like he’s practiced this weekend, he’ll easy escape.
Speaking of teammates, Chase Elliott should be fine too. Elliott, won at Watkins Glen last month to go along with being sixth, eighth and first respectively in practice in his No. 9 Chevrolet. The Georgia native also has five top 10 finishes in his last seven starts on the season as well.
