Bowman Has An Interesting Day With Runner-Up Sunday In Charlotte

Alex Bowman didn’t feel too confident in his chances of moving onto the Round of 12 heading into this weekend’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver started getting sick earlier this week and was under the weather for the final race of the opening round of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Plus, Bowman finished 14th in both other road course races run this season and only had one top five finish in his last 16 starts heading into Charlotte. He also had scored only two top 10 finishes in his last 11 races in his No. 88 Chevrolet too.

Then, he went out and qualified his car on the front row on Friday. Things were looking up. Unfortunately, he crashed in the final seconds of final practice and would have to go to a backup car. As a result, he’d have to forego his second place start and move to the rear.

On the opening lap, Bowman spun. On Lap 22, he was collected in a big crash in Turn 1. The day wasn’t look good. On Lap 41, he and Bubba Wallace had an on track incident which left both showing each other the bird and Wallace throwing water in Bowman’s face as he lay by his car following the race.

Definitely some bad blood there. That comes a week after Bowman and Austin Dillon had a run-in at Richmond.

Still, despite all of that, Bowman charged hard to a runner-up finish in the race. It was his second top six in the last three starts on the season as by virtue of that, he advances to the Round of 12.

What a wild day.
