MADISON, Ill – Racing is a tough sport. You can go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in no time flat. See, in the last Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing Series event at Reading, Richie Crampton and Jack Beckman each earned victories in their respectively divisions. Crampton, topped his teammate Doug Kalitta in the finals of Top Fuel while Beckman finally got over the hump and beat John Force in the Funny Car finals. Beckman, was 0-for-6 in final round appearances heading into that weekend.
Just one race later, both were eliminated in the opening round of the AAA Midwest Nationals at the World Wide Technology Raceway.
Also, both Torrence’s were eliminated from the first round in Reading but made it to the finals in St. Louis.
Beckman, came into St. Louis as the Funny Car points leader. His defeat wasn’t necessarily an upset though as JR Todd topped him in their first round matchup. Todd, would later go on to defeat top qualifier John Force in the second round too.
For “Fast Jack” this was the first time since Epping (7 races) that he was eliminated in the opening round.
For Crampton, despite his win two weeks ago, this was his fourth first round loss in the last five races though.
This just goes to show you that you can’t get too comfortable in this sport.
